Goetia in 777

Postby Heru » Thu Aug 31, 2006 2:52 pm

Does anyone know how Crowley came up with the Goetia correspondences in 777? There doesn't seem to be anything in the Lesser Key of Solomon that points to how Crowley could have made the attributions that he did.

Did Crowley draw these correspondences from an older source or did he make them up himself?

I'm interested in this because I'm currently working with DuQuette's, Tarot of Ceremonial Magick. He's placed the correct Goetic demon on each minor card. But this information comes straight from 777 with no explantion of how or why. :?

Crowley gave proposed Hebrew spellings of the Goetic spirit names. These spellings were often terribly mangled. They appear to have been based on the Hebrew spellings of Dr. Rudd which were given in the frontispiece of Fra. P.'s edition of The Goetia. Yet the variations cannot reasonably be attributed to an attempt by Crowley to edit or correct these. In most cases, 777 simply left off the last several letters of the names! Only in a very few cases (such as the transliteration of an English "x") can a distinct effort at such editing be identified.

As to the order of the names, look at the parenthetical numbers. The first name in the pseudo-Solomonic catalogue is attributed to the first decanate of Aries, the second to the second decanate, etc., and then they just continue around the zodiac through the first 36. Then the second 36 follow the same pattern to get the nocturnal attributions.

Of course! It's so obvious. In fact it's been under my nose the whole time and I failed to spot it.
