A few precautions about yoga ?

Postby Diogenos » Thu Jun 19, 2014 4:32 am

Greetings people,

My question is a little bit practical but I believe it is important to speak about it with other persons. I practiced yoga for six months last year ; that wasn't really fascinating in my opinion, but I discovered another face of yoga since I'm interested in Thelema.
You see, I heard that a few precautions had to be observed when practicing yoga :
- Do not take a shower one hour before/after the exercize.
-Do not eat one hour before/after the exercize.
-Take five minutes after the exercize to get back in the common world.

To sum up, that was the rules my teacher taught me : do you think it is relevant and why ? I could conceive it as related to vital energies of the body ; of course, since I am only a student in yoga, I am not certain of that, it is only a supposition :)

What do you think about those three rules ? Is it relevant to practice them ?

These have nothing to do with Thelema per se, though some of them are useful.

First, it sounds like you are talking about hatha yoga in particular. These could be undesirable rules for, say, pratyahara practice if, say, they created conditions that distract you.

For hatha yoga, I see no advantage on the first rule - it sounds superstitious. However, if you're going to work up a sweat in a morning session, it makes sense to shower afterwards :)

The food issue is common sense. No need to be rigid, but, rather, find out what works best for you. Pranayama is more affected by this than asana.

The third one also makes sense, especially if your practice "spaces" and you have to drive. I find this more relevant for ritual than yoga. The time it takes for a diary entry (which should always, ideally, be done immediately after a formal practice) would usually take care of this.
Love is the law, love under will.

Thanks Jim
I didn't think about using those "five more minutes" to write an entry in my spiritual diary... I have to say I do not often practice that : I know Crowley thought that is was really important, and I guess those five minutes could be used for that.

For more explanations about those recommandations (that seem to be mostly superstitious according to you), you have to know I practiced integral yoga, mostly influenced by Sri Aurobindo's works. Not the best one in my opinion.

Besides the first, pretty solid advice.
Personally, I take a shower prior to performing the Work.
Formulating the intent of washing myself clean,
Purifying my self of the entanglement of the material
To seek the spiritual
There is only one verse,
sung in infinite ways.
-
"Here!"
I come or came?
I sung!
To seeD the Way
-
God sings,
WE experience:
THE UNIVERSE!
