RifRaf wrote:What does HHH mean? In Liber ABA it is a formula of some sort and is compared to IAO.

HHH stands for the 3 Mother Letters of the Hebrew alphabet - Heh being used for Mother. Each part of the book is then related, in turn to one of these three (Mem, Aleph, Shin).

The comparison to IAO is that the Kabbalah makes occasional reference of three "Lost Fathers." One interpretation of this is that the "lost" Father Letters are those used to spell IAO. Sacramentally. there is an important formula rooted in the New Testament and in the 5=6 ceremony of the G.D. wherein the Three Mothers (A M Sh = 341) interlock with the Three Fathers (I A V = 17) to disclose the Messiah (= 358).

[The reason I put this thread in Mysticism instead of Qabalah is because as I am working with the practices and I will inevitably have other questions regarding the practical side of this Liber and I wanted this thread to encompass the whole of the paper.]

FWIW, none of this is relevant to the practice of Liber HHH. Also, if you are practicing from this work, please note that SSS is one of the few openly published practices that can do serious harm if you don't have right preparation - which is surely one of the reasons it is assigned, in A.'.A.'., to the 3=8 grade after one has already passed examination in asana and pranayama to graduate from 2=9.

Jim would you mind explaining your warning in more detail.

Although Crowley mentions "If in this hour thou shouldst die" I had not taken it literally. I wonder if I'm missing something in the published instructions. Actually it's probably likely I'm missing a great deal.

When I'm approaching this practice, I do it much as I would Regardie's middle pillar, or the circulation of light; however in this case there is no circulation going on - much more the striving of negative and positive charged forces trying to fuse together utilizing my spinal cord as the medium.

Perhaps if I could step back and ask you for any pointers or tips on how to more properly approach and practice this ritual - that would be helpful.

SSS hard-forces kundalini up the channels. It isn't just a little visualization exercise: Done as written, it calls for a kinesthetically-anchored hard-forcing of the energy upward.

When this is practiced as a 3=8, we know a couple of things are true. First, we know that the person has mastered asana to the level of very long, very stable physical stillness; and is moderately advanced in pranayama, indicating that there is a certain purification of the channels, at least unconscious instinct for managing the body's energy flows, etc. Finally, it is almost certain that significant kundalini activity has begun well before that point, so that this becomes a refinement and specialization, rather than a "forcing something open."

When I'm approaching this practice, I do it much as I would Regardie's middle pillar, or the circulation of light; however in this case there is no circulation going on - much more the striving of negative and positive charged forces trying to fuse together utilizing my spinal cord as the medium.

Feeling each vertebra as an individual entity - tightly-concentrated attention on each inch of the spine, which the paper states is a prerequisite before doing any further part of the meditation - and the setting of the brain to hunger with great passion to suck off the spine - is a very big deal! Concentrating on the spine so intensely that you are "unconscious of all else" (par. 7) is a big deal.

At the very least, I strongly recommend your reading Gopi Krishna's autobiography first to see the consequences of forcing the kundalini channels open prematurely by brute-force concentration, and what he learned over the next several decades of his life.

Extracts from Kundalini: the Evolutionary Energy in Man (Shambhala Press 1967, Gopi Krishna)
Online (http://scienceandreligion.com/gk/kundalini_gk.htm):

When accidentally the centre begins to function prematurely, before the nerve connections and links have ben fully established and the delicate brain cells habituated to the flow of the powerful current, the result is likely to be disastrous. The delicate tissues of the body in that case are likely to be damaged irreparably, causing strange maladies, insanity, or death. In a grave emergency of this kind, the only way open to nature to avoid a catastrophe is to use liberally the ambrosia contained in the humans eed and to rush it in a sublimated form to the brain, the nervous network, and the main organs in order to provide the injured and dying cells with the most powerful restorative and food available in the body to save life.

The whole organism now begins to function in a most amazing manner which cannot but strike terror into the stoutest heart. Tossed between the old and yet incompletely built new conscious centre, the subject, unprepared for such a startling development, sees himself losing control of his throughts and actions. He find himself confronted by a rebellious mind and unruly senses and organs working in an inexplicable way, entirely foreign to him, as if the world, suddenly turned upside down, had dragged him to a topsy-turvy existence as weird and bizarre as the most fantastic dream. It is for this reason that the ancient teachers of Kundalini Yoga, taught by an experience extending for thousands of years, insisted on an exceptionally robust and hardy constitution, mastery over appetites and desires, voluntarily acquired control over vital functions and organs, and, above all, the possession of an inflexible will as the essentially needed qualifications in those offering themselves for the supreme undertaking of rousing the Shakti. An excellent condition of both body and mind, dificult to achieve in the unfavourable environment of modern civilisation, is absolutely neccessary in an enterprise of this nature to prevent the brain giving way completely under the unbearable strain.

It is not surprising, therefore, that anyone who set himself determinedly to the hazardous task of awakening Kundalini before her time was acclaimed a Vira, meaning a hero, and the practice itself designated as Vira Sadhana, or heroic undertaking, even by fearless ascetics themselves, indifferent to physical torture and death.

After the awakening, the devotee lives always at the mercy of Kundalini, wafted to a new state of existence and introduced to a new world as far removed from this one of rapid change and decay as reality is from a dream. The hypersensitive and critical condition of the nerves and the brain caused by the unceasing effort of the marvellous, invisible power to mould them to a higher and higher state of cognition, the possibility of injury and damage to the over-sensitive tissues, the process of repair and rejuvenation with the administration of nerve tonics and restoratives present in the system, and the tremendous strain on the excessively worked reproductive organs may continue undiminished for years.

I was struck by this bit...

the only way open to nature to avoid a catastrophe is to use liberally the ambrosia contained in the humans eed and to rush it in a sublimated form to the brain

Don't now much about that last bit, I have to admit.

There is a prescription drug called "Abilify" available from psychiatrists that can help calm things down. They're likely to label it as the manic phase of bipolar disorder.

...sounds like the Judaic conceptualization of the post-Messianic age, no?

That's actually an interesting comment because (while I do think Gopi Krishna is describing the actual symptomology) the side effect of all those doors of perception being opened before it's time is that the person is instantly hurled into the psycho-spiritual drama of dealing with all of the most deeply repressed aspects of their personality. And, in my mind, at least, that ties in with the spirit of what you said.

Some of this is personal opinion mixed with the more scholarly thoughts of others. If I have time tonight, I'll post a quote from Occult Psychology - a horribly underappreciated little book.

I was hinting more at 358, but I see your point.

I suspect they are referring to retrograde ejaculation where the sperm enters the bladder. Some yogis believe that the sperm goes to the brain.

The only piece of Liber HHH I have touched on is MMM at the same time practicing the Shin-of-Shin Mental operations, which are almost one and the same, or am I wrong?

On that note, I was wondering if anyone knew why in paragraph 14 of section AAA it says, "Then shalt thou withdraw thyself from the Vision, gathering thyself into the divine form of Osiris upon his throne."

Why is it not Horus, or is this meditation based on another version of Ritual CXX than that commonly found on the internet?

That's a really good question. Yes, in that spot, if this were a direct one-for-one equation, I'd expect Horus.

I think the answer is that the meditation is not the same as the ritual, and it isn't a direct one-for-one. Other things are represented differently in AAA than in the ritual itself. Going just from memory, in doing HHH decades ago as a 2=9, the Osiris presence felt intuitively right (at least, not wrong) and (without checking diaries) I think mostly registered just as the Sun, especially the Midnight Sun.

Thanks very much for your response Jim. I can sort of follow your intuitive logic (forgive the oxymoron) there.

Other things are represented differently in AAA than in the ritual itself.

Yes, I would have to agree with you there. Which made me wonder if the meditation was actually from somewhere else, such as the 'Ritual of Passing through the Waters', which of course is similar in many respects. In point 12 of that ritual it states, "The insight of Horus is given unto him in the power of Hoor and Isis. He is Asar." Although the rest of that ritual does not fit as well with the mediation as does Ritual CXX.

Thanks again.

In order to avoid the serious problems with forcing kundalini upwards, it may also be instructive to see how Taoists do chi kung which is roughly equivalent to pranayama.

For instance, one of their most important practices is one called Small Universe in which you also raise the energy from the root of penis along the spine and all the way to the brain. However, Taoists also say that the brain is good for reflecting and transforming energy, but not so good at storing it. In fact it can be dangerous. That's why the Small Universe practice also includes directing the energy from the brain like a stream of water along the front of your body to your dantian in your lower belly. They say this is a safe place to store the energy.

Also, the Taoists maintain that you shouldn't force the energy to flow to one place. Instead, you just focus your will on the place and the energy should flow there, provided you're experienced enough.

There are also some easy to read books about Taoist sexual techniques, called The Multi-orgasmic Man and The Multi-orgasmic Couple, by Mantak Chia et al.

Quick question on HHH... MMM, initial stages is he talking about rigidity and resultant phenomena induced by long successful asana, or just guided visualization?

The entire HHH is a series of consciously willed images and states of mind. This isn't a spontaneous effect (the lightning flash etc.) - but neither is it just a simple visualization. After the preliminaries you actually make the event occur.

(This meditation is worth undertaking at different levels of skill. That, in part, is why it is given to the 1=10, but not required to be passed until moving from 2=9 to 3=8.)
