Jim,

In lieu of your comments about the time it would take to put together a solid chapter on astrology, I would prefer that you release the book earlier and make that section another book at another time. However, I think that some tables to help folks like me with little to no astrological background would be beneficial - I will try to be more specific:

I'm looking through your commentary on LOE right now, and coming across this line: "Cancer is ruled by the Moon", I'm struck by my own ignorance on what rules what. That sort of table would be extremely helpful.

Signs with their symbols would be helpful as well.
Are signs considered masculine or feminine?
Which are Earth signs, Fire signs, etc.
What signs are fixed, cardinal, mutable (and a small description of what that means)

This type of information is really really basic, and surely I should have been able to memorize it by now, but when I imagine myself on a dessert island, with your upcoming book, this is the type of basic correspondences that I would want to flip back to when presented with some of the material in your current commentary on the Aethyrs.

My 2 cents

We overlapped on posting - I snuck one in right above yours, so won't bore you with repeating it.

That specific information is in the book - in a table showing the attributions of astrological factors to the Enochian letters. So you're covered by that. OTOH this is one of the basics you would pick up from the most introductory preliminaries every occultist already should know. Specific recommendation: The Golden Dawn's knowledge lecture for the 0=0 grade lists the names, glyphs, and sequence of the 12 signs, the glyphs and names of the planets, and the rulerships and exaltations. Grab your GD book off the shelf and learn that. You'll be all ready to go! :D

[
re signs considered masculine or feminine?

Yes, but irrelevant to anything in the book.

Which are Earth signs, Fire signs, etc.

Also in the GD 0=0 Knowledge Lecture. (Also probably irrelevant to anything in the book.)

What signs are fixed, cardinal, mutable (and a small description of what that means)

I think this was in the GD 0=0 KL too (and doesn't come up anyplace I can remember in the book)\ but, in case not, here is the table:

Cardinal (or Rim): Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn
Fixed (or Hub): Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius
Mutable (or Spoke): Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces

This type of information is really really basic, and surely I should have been able to memorize it by now, but when I imagine myself on a dessert island, with your upcoming book, this is the type of basic correspondences that I would want to flip back to when presented with some of the material in your current commentary on the Aethyrs.

The good news is (1) most of that isn't at all relevant to the book, rulerships and exaltation excepted and, (2) you can get most or all of it from the GD 0=0 KL.

Yeah - GD KL 1 - I know. I have access to all the right tables; but scattered about. I was seeing what might be possible to cram into the new book as a helpful appendix or 2. But you addressed that some of it is irrelevant and if so, toss the idea.

Looking forward to the book. Your AA book is constantly getting opened. Keep up the Great Work ;)

Thank you kindly, sir. - I also appreciate the recommendations. As a writer (and, at least as much as a publisher) the question continues to be how to serve the audience. As a publisher there is also the practical question of wanting to expand the potential readership, which significantly expands the issue of serving the range of types of readers; yet one doesn't want to lose focus on the central work by trying to make it "all things to all people." Balance is the key to publishing, as to the Great Work <vbg>.

Meanwhile, I'll see what little tweaks and touches I can slip in here and there.

Given my relatively poor understanding of the language of astrology I am finding more in the analysis in BP of personal worth (at this time) in the prose (approachable and enjoyable!) between the heavier astrological parts.

I realise you can't cover every instance of www is in the xxx sextant with yyy opposing a strong zzz, in this kind of work, you'd have to write another book - the analysis of the analysis to achieve that....

But I would add that the thought of an analysis of V&V would appeal to many who might not have such a well-structured familiarity with astrology.
Tough call.

IMHO anyone interested in magick should have several substantial books on astrology. I think that would serve far better than even another few dozen pages summarizing high points.

Despite the fact that he never overcame his Tropical hindrance, Crowley's underappreciated tome on the subject (Liber 536) is an excellent introduction to the study of Astrology. In particular, his section on Rising Signs is classic Crowley: equal parts wit, scorn, and erudition--with a healthy smattering of lofty, egotistical prose. (The section on Leo is particularly amusing. It's all to obvious that he was quite proud of his Leonian nature, when in fact he embodies all the cranky charm of the Crab. )

At any rate, I look forward to your treatment of the subject, Jim.

This is interesting to me for a couple reasons. The way I discovered this website was due to a dream I had 5 years ago.

In the dream I found myself in The Duat. I was waiting to have my heart weighed and I saw Maynard Keenan, lead singer of Tool. An aside, some of you may not be familiar with the magical energy they project during concerts, but they commonly hang a star of Babalon on stage, along with large circular boards sporting various sigils.

Anyway, many references in their music as well. So I had noticed these subtle occult clues on their Lateralus album and began just looking into crowley.

Back to the dream. I went and sat down by maynard and we began a conversation. I asked him if he had any hobbies and he starts pulling these suitcases out. "I collect retro suitcases" he tells me. He pops one open and there are stacks of zines. He hands one to me and says, "Here, google this when you wake up. It's called Black Pearl. You'll enjoy it."
So I wake up and google it and ::pow!:: whatyah know? Black Pearl..a thelemic zine which I had never heard of. That told me I was on to something. I wrote to most likely Jim, asking where i could find them and was told they were no longer in circulation. Darn. But I started studying and reading this board and voila! Now today I can finally read them. Pretty cool!

(1) Update Adobe Reader; or
(2) Re-download the file.

I just downloaded the file. It took about 10 minutes on a T1 line, so it's large. It opened fine in Acrobat Reader 9.3.4.

Another thanks for these, Jim!

I've been reading them on my kindle (another w00t!) and I must say, they really were ahead of their time in may ways. A lot of what they cover are things that I am just beginning to understand for the first time now.

Jim, the 3 pdf links on the /bp.html ought to be updated, I think.

ooh. drop box. yep. Since you're giving these things away free, might I suggest you investigate making them available on Scribd.com? You might make some scratch.
